NVSL Training for Stroke and Turn Judges

SUPERTeam is designed to offer younger swimmers who have completed all levels of swim lessons, but who’s skills are such that they cannot compete with older, stronger swimmers, the ability to be part of the Sully ll Swim Team Program. It is designed to make these swimmers feel “part of the team”, without discouraging them through the lengthy practices, competition, etc. that is encountered by older swimmers.

SUPERTeam is not:

1) Swimming lessons; SUPERTeamers will be screened to determine their eligibility, and those who do not have a basic understanding of each stroke, or who are not believed to be physically ready for these practices, will be encouraged to take swim lessons until next season. The decision of who is eligible rests solely with the Coach and the Team Representatives at the time of screening. SUPERTeam will be limited to 20 swimmers, unless the demand is so high that another group needs to be added. This low number assures individual attention by the Coach, and therefore will not be changed.

2) Competitive; SUPERTeamers can attend the regular meets, and may participate in a short-course race across the diving well (or across the full pool as skills improve), but will not generally participate in these meets. We will schedule a SUPERTeam meet for the end of July where the pool will be set up as in a regular meet with flags, timers, etc. We STRONGLY ENCOURAGE parents to attend this meet and cheer their young swimmers. Other swimmers will be on-hand to “provide support” and make it as realistic as possible. We will swim across the diving well or across the full pool depending on skill level. Awards will be handed out at this event. Look for details in the swim team newsletter during the season.

SUPERTeam is:

1) Important; SUPERTeamers are the future of our swim team and it is important to develop this relationship and their skills; we will swim for four weeks with morning practices after the older team has practiced. SUPERTeam is coached by the coaches of the Sully ll Piranhas, who are able to develop continuity with all the swimmers. The four strokes will be covered (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly), so the SUPERTeamers are learning the same strokes as their older counterparts.

2) Fun, Fun, Fun; SUPERTeamers and their families take part in all of the Sully Station ll Swim Team’s social events and fundraisers. This includes a kick-off party, mid-season party, pep rallies, and awards night potluck dinner. One of the main reasons for having a community swim team is to foster a close-knit spirit, and we want the SUPERTeamers to be a part of that fun.

At registration, SUPERTeam candidates will simply register their interest (no registration fee). After the pool opens, SUPERTeam candidates will be screened by the Coach and by the Team Representatives and will be either placed on the team or requested to continue with lessons until next year. Those placed on SUPERTeam will then be required to pay the registration fee before practice begins in late June.
